Cultural Programme
On 25 July 2018, 93 P5 pupils and 6 teachers went to Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre to watch the latest Mandarin magical musical play “The Wizard of Oz”, which was presented by the Singapore Focus Theatre in collaboration with EZ HOUSE ARTS STUDIO. It was a great performance which left the audience with a memorable experience and lasting impression. Dorothy wanted so much to save her grandmother’s life. She took a ride with the magical tornado into the magical Emerald city. She made friends with a brainless scarecrow, a heartless tin man and a timid lion. They all have their wishes they wanted to fulfil, so they worked together, learnt from one other, and endured hardships together to finally achieve their wishes. The music and magic elements successfully created a magical kingdom. Together with the values emphasized by the Ministry of Education and the unique experiences of local students, this western plot was modified to suit the needs of the audiences, at the same time teaching them valuable lessons through the show, to cultivate good habit and values in them. This show also encouraged and inspired students’ interest in the learning of Chinese Language.
Mother Tongue Fortnight 2018
The month of July was an exciting and inspiring one for our pupils. This year, the Mother Tongue (MT) department had designated two consecutive weeks from 3 July to 13 July for MTL Fortnight Programme, during which, a variety of activities that promote experiential and engaging learning were organised to expose our pupils to the rich local culture. The pupils participated in activities with hands on sessions such as Clay Sculpture, Bean Art, Blowing Painting and Kite Making.
The Primary One pupils happily presenting their clay figurines.
The Primary Two pupils participated in a Chinese Bean Art activity where they used a mixture of beans to do up a marvellous art piece.
The Primary Three and Primary Four pupils participated in the Blow Painting activity where they used a straw to blow the ink in the direction the tree branches were to spread out to. Showcasing their art pieces - a beautiful tree filled with plum blossoms.
The Primary Five and Six pupils learnt kite-making, which involves designing, building the skeletal structure of the kite and colouring.
For the Primary Three pupils, a one-day cultural camp was conducted on the 11th July 2018. The Chinese pupils put their crafty hands to work as they got actively involved in the Paper Quilling activity. On top of these, the pupils also enjoyed Sichuan Opera Face Changing performance.
Hosting of Kunshan Experimental Elementary School from China
In July this year, West Grove Primary School welcomed a group of 29 P5 Chinese students and four teachers from Kunshan Experimental Primary School, China. The entourage participated in classroom activities, such as Art, Music, Science and even specially-designed PE lessons. They also had the opportunity to experience the Southeast Asia culture through batik painting and Indian Henna painting. Although the interaction only happened briefly, the friendship between the two schools was fostered.
Overseas Immersion Programme 2018
In May 2018, our teachers led a group of 18 selected Primary 5 pupils to embark on a meaningful learning journey to Suzhou, China. They visited our twinning school, Kunshan Experimental Elementary School and had an unforgettable experience of the vibrant classroom culture, Chinese traditional fine arts as well as innovative and hands-on activities during the 3 day visit. The children also visited various places of interest in the tranquil city of Suzhou and Hangzhou. Also not forgetting, the ever-changing, dynamic metropolis Shanghai.
In the school we had visited, I was surprised as there were quite a few things there that are different from Singapore. They have way more CCAs than we do. For example, they have a 3D printing club and a car simulation club. We did many fun things like airplane making and we did an exchange of performances.

We had a chance to make some friends there. While I was attending the lessons, I noticed that the students there were very attentive to the teacher or the speaker as they spoke. Most of the students were very engaged in lesson and kept answering the questions the teacher had asked.
We also had an art lesson at the school. To my surprise, they used Chinese brushes to draw. In Singapore, we are introduced to batik painting, water colouring, oil pastels. But in china, they use unique brushes and Chinese watercolour to draw. At the beginning, I was totally clueless of what to do. Luckily, there was help from the students there. We also completed a wonderful piece of art.

Lanli Garden Embroidery Research Institute
We learnt how to embroider. Embroidery is a tedious and hard process, as you could injure yourself by piercing your finger with a needle, and one mistake could ruin the whole picture. While we only embroidered small flower petals, some people manage to make an entire picture.
What I had Learnt
- I learnt to be independent as my parents were not there to help me.
- I learnt to be appreciative of what I had, as there were many beggars on the street.
- I also learnt about China's rich history, and all the gods that the Chinese people worshipped.

P5 CL Parental Workshop
More than 50 parents took time off their busy work schedule to attend the P5 Chinese and Higher Chinese Parent Workshop conducted during the March school holidays. P5 Chinese teachers shared invaluable insights and tips to improve their child’s performance in the various assessment components. The interactive Q&A session was a fruitful one with parents airing their concerns and teachers clarifying their doubts. It was clearly evident and heartening for teachers to know that parents are actively supporting their children in their important journey towards PSLE. This positive parent-teacher partnership will greatly benefit the child, ultimately bringing about academic success.
Chinese New Year Celebration 2018
Making the lanterns was very fun. The difficulty we faced was folding the angbaos as the steps were very complicated. The angbaos were also hard to fold because some angbaos were made of card. We did not know how to make the lanterns on our first attempt. We also did not know how to measure the string to hang the angbaos so our teacher helped us. We have learnt to work together and not quarrel.
Putting up the lanterns was difficult because we are not tall enough to reach the top corners of the whiteboards. So we stood on a chair to help us put up the lanterns. After putting up the lanterns, the classroom looked nice. We were very proud of ourselves after our hard work.

"There was a poor family who did not have any food. They only had money for one rice cake. They made the rice cake by noon.
When they were about to eat the rice cake, something strange happened. The rice cake came alive and started running out of the house and towards the animals. "Hey, is that for me?" Asked the pig. But the rice cake just kept running. Then it ran towards the dog and cat, but it turned out that the rice cake was actually running towards grandma's mouth. The family ran after the rice cake feeling hungry. The rice cake went inside grandma's mouth and was gobbled up by grandma! Suddenly, grandma turned into a goddess! She then gave the family many sacks of rice and some monty to make more rice cakes."
This is our favourite story from the 3 days of pre-assembly storytelling sessions. From this story, we learnt that we should give back to others who are more needy. We also learnt that anyone can be a blessing in disguise.
The thing we find funny is the story's close resemblance to the famous story "The Gingerbread Man". Instead of finishing the whole story, we would suggest that the storyteller stop telling the story at its climax so that students will be interested to borrow the storybook from the school library.

Classroom Quiz & Lion Dance Classroom Blessing
From the quiz, I learnt that different zodiac animals have different characteristics. One example is the dragon being swift and wise. I also learnt that some people in China may be poorer than us, yet they may be enjoying Chinese New Year more than us as they celebrate more time with their families. They also seem to cook better food than us even though they may have limited cooking utilities
The lion dance was incredible as there was a balance of fear and majestic feel to it. The lion looked fierce with its thick fur and red eyes. Its heart beats were made by hitting the Chinese drum. The lion was very agile and it moved quickly and made many back-breaking turns. The lion dancer successfully portrayed the lion as a terrifying beast.

We felt very excited to attend the Chinese New Year concert. Last year's concert was a huge blast and we expect this year's concert to be as entertaining as the previous ones.
Firstly, the hosts introduced themselves. We saw one of our classmates, Koh Feng Wei dressed in a costume.
Then, the lions came onto the stage, surprising the audience. The Chinese God of Fortune also came, walking around the hall. After the lions had performed, NASCANS students danced on stage. Then, members of the Martial Arts group wowed everyone, including the teachers, with their martial skills. It was fantastic when Choir came on stage and presented their singing skills.
For the finale, all concert participants gathered on stage, encouraging everyone in singing the festive songs.
My favourite concert item is however the Orange Peeling Competition, where student representatives from each level participated. Classes cheered the representatives on.
The whole concert was fun but it was also saddening as this is our last Chinese New Year concert in West Grove Primary. Next year, we will all be attending Chinese New Year concert in our secondary schools.
We will always cherish the moments of this year’s Chinese New Year concert.

It was a good bonding session as colleagues gathered to Lo Hei for good luck, abundance and prosperity. The session, complemented by a mini buffet spread, lifted up everyone’s spirits as well as the celebratory atmosphere during Chinese New Year.

7. P6 Post Exam Activity – Chinese Seal Engraving
P6 Post Exam Activity is conducted by the Chinese Department for the P6 students after their PSLE. Students are introduced to the fundamental of Chinese Seal Engraving including some basic knowledge on its history. Students enjoyed the lesson tremendously as they had a hands-on session to make their own seal. Not only do they have a better understanding of the knowledge of seal making, students learnt about patient, responsibility, coordination and good craftsmanship through the lesson. All of them walked away with a big smile at the end of the lesson!
